NEW YORK – July 8, 2016 – PRLog — The Retail Design Institute, the industry’s largest association for design professionals, has published the latest installment of the highly anticipated Store of the Year book series featuring dozens of award winning projects. Macy’s Herald Square 4th Floor Men’s Activewear and Shoes was recognized with an Award of Merit under the category of New Shop within an Existing Full-Line or Specialty Department Store. Highland Associates, acting as Executive Architect, provided Architectural and Engineering design services to Macy’s, Inc. for their unprecedented, 4-year renovation. The effort has reinvented and elevated the shopping experience at Macy’s flagship store at Herald Square in New York City, the world’s largest department store. Work began in early spring 2012 on the $400 million project and continued in phases through the fall of 2015.
More than 125 projects from around the world competed in 21 categories reflecting both hard lines and soft lines in formats ranging from department, specialty, supermarket and mass merchant to pop-‐up and common area. The Institute’s New York Chapter handled the judging of this year’s competition headed by 2015 New York Board Member and Competition Chair, Diana Bernal, Richemont.
According to published excerpts from the book, “….the (4th Floor, Men’s Activewear and Shoes) transformation added variety and visual interest throughout with high performance materials and finishes used to ensure the space will take extraordinary wear and tear in this highly trafficked location. Systematically removing walls that hid escalators and exposing ceilings, added an urban feel of design.”
The published book of award winning projects illustrates how elements come together from the architecture, interior layout, materials and lighting to merchandise presentation. This publication serves as a valuable reference material for retailers, architects, designers, visual merchandisers and suppliers working within the retail industry.
As Executive Architect, Highland Associates worked with Macy’s, Inc.’s internal planning, design and construction teams on the Macy’s Herald Square renovation program along with Master planning support from New York based, Charles Sparks + Company, STUDIO V Architecture, Kevin Kennon Architects. In addition to Executive Architect, Highland Associates provided full mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering design services
